The Ultimate Guide to the UK’s Best Parkruns

Every Saturday morning, millions of people across the UK lace up their running shoes for parkrun: a free, weekly 5k event that has become a true British institution. What started as a local community event has now grown into a nationwide movement, fuelled by the post-Covid ‘Couch-to-5k’ boom alongside the rise of millennial run clubs.

But for many, the joy of parkrun now extends far beyond their local course. Introducing  “parkrun tourism” – the growing trend of competing in running events up and down the country. It’s become so popular in fact, that over 63,900 Instagram posts now include the hashtag “parkruntourist”, and recent Google searches for “best parkruns” have increased by 20%. But, with over 820 parkruns in the UK alone, the real challenge is choosing where to run next.

To help parkrunners of all levels and tourists alike, the team at Gazeboshop conducted a data-led study to uncover the best parkruns in the UK. We’ve analysed everything from average weather conditions and course difficulty, to finish times and “Instagrammability” to create a definitive ranking to inspire your next parkrun adventure.

How we conducted the study

To uncover the UK’s best parkruns, we carried out a comprehensive data-led study between July – August 2025. We analysed 100 parkruns, carefully selected to represent locations across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Our research considered a wide range of factors, including:

  • Weather conditions– average monthly temperature and rainfall (Met Office data)
  • Performance stats – average 5k finish times and personal bests (official parkrun site)
  • Popularity and appeal -hashtag counts and Google search volumes (Instagram and SEO tools)

Each factor was ranked on a scale of 1-10, allowing us to compare courses like-for-like. These scores were then averaged to create distinct categories for example, the fastest to the slowest or most ‘viral’. Then we identified the top performers across all measures to crown the UK’s best parkrun.

Bushy Park Parkrun

As the original parkrun event and a pilgrimage site for parkrun tourists across the globe, it’s no surprise that Bushy Park is the most viral parkrun in the UK. Its combination of historic significance and beautiful scenery makes it an event that’s worthy of virality. It ranks as the most Instagrammed parkrun in our study, with the hashtags #bushyparkrun and #bushyparkrunners being posted over 5,100 times. It is also the third most-Googled parkrun in our study, with over 62,140 searches for ‘Bushy Park Parkrun’.

Park in the Past Parkrun

Park in the Past Parkrun is an interesting case study in viral popularity. While it ranked among the lowest for Instagram hashtags, with #parkinthepastparkrun posted under 100 times, it is the most-Googled parkrun in our study, with a staggering 377,710 searches. The high search volume is likely a result of its unique features, with the park itself being a heritage destination containing a Roman fort and other historical features.

Paisley Park Parkrun

Like Park in the Past, Paisley Park Parkrun is another event with huge Google search volumes, but a low social media profile. It ranked as the second most-Googled parkrun in the study, with 138,350 searches recorded, whilst #paisleyparkparkrun has been used under 100 times on Instagram. This high search volume is likely a result of its unique location, as it is home to a track where the legendary Kenyan runner Kip Keino once ran. The course’s varied terrain also draws significant interest from runners looking for a new challenge.

Poole Parkrun

Poole Parkrun is an all-around performer, both on the course and online. Its reputation for being a fast event for parkrunners and its beautiful location on Poole Harbour likely contribute to its consistently high search volume and social media mentions. It ranked eighth for Google searches (25,940) and tied for third place for Instagram hashtags, with around 1,000 #pooleparkrun mentions.

Edinburgh Parkrun (Cramond)

Edinburgh Parkrun is another event that has gained significant traction online. The out-and-back course along the Cramond waterfront is known for its stunning views, making it an excellent location for both a fast time and a great photo. This combination of a good reputation among runners and an attractive location explains why it is the second most-Instagrammed parkrun, with around 1,100 #edinburghparkrun and #edinburghparkrunners recorded hashtags. It is also the 12th most-Googled event, with a search volume of 18,070.

Why Parkrun is For Everyone

To dig a bit deeper into our findings, we spoke with Samantha Richards, Gazeboshop’s lead analyst, about the motivation behind the research and what makes parkrun so special.

Every Saturday, the parkrun community comes together to be active and enjoy the outdoors, which is a tradition we’re delighted to champion at Gazeboshop. It’s easy to lace up when the sun is shining and the feather flags are out, but parkrun is just as important during the colder months to help combat the winter blues. The benefits go far beyond fitness: being outdoors boosts mental health, and the social side, gathering before and after the run under the inflatable gazebo and arches, fosters a strong sense of community among both friends and strangers. It’s this spirit that makes parkrun such a powerful event.”

Samantha Richards went on to explain how the study may benefit runners:

“We hope our findings encourage runners, novices and enthusiasts alike, to get involved. Not just at their local parkrun, but to explore the ‘best’ parkruns, for them, across the UK. For some, that might mean chasing PBs on the fastest courses. For others, it’s the scenic views or Instagrammable backdrops. Whatever your motivation, parkrun is for everyone. The most important thing is showing up, being active and enjoying the community, something we are proud to support with our iconic inflatable arches, boldly marking the start and end of the course.

Ending with some key advice for beginners:

“If you’re thinking of trying parkrun for the first time, it’s normal to feel nervous. But remember, it’s not a race and you can walk, jog or run entirely at your own pace. Every event has a tail walker who always finishes last, so you’ll never be on your own at the back. And if you don’t want to go solo, bring a friend with you. You’ll be glad you did.”
